Honeycrisp applesauce – naturally sweet

Honeycrisp applesauce – naturally sweet

Fall is finally here, which means it is apple season! I love it when the apples from north Georgia start showing up my neighborhood farmers market. When I was growing up, my grandmother would go to Ellijay every fall to get apples and make us applesauce. She said that Arkansas Black apples made the best applesauce. However, I recently discovered that Honeycrisp apples are so naturally sweet, if you use them you don’t need to add any extra sugar.

My honeycrisp applesauce recipe just uses Honeycrisp apples, water, and a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Once you try it, it will be hard to go back to applesauce from a jar!  If you can’t find Honeycrsip apples, Southern Living has suggestions on other apple varieties that make good applesauce.

  • I’ve just tried this recipe as a healthy snack option! It tastes just like apple pie, but one thing’s missing from it…. COVER IT! I left it uncovered for 1.5hrs and all it did was dry up the liquid with no cooking. Once I put a lid on my pot, it finally cooked properly, it was easy to smash the apples to the consustency we like and tastes great! 🙂 Another suggestion, use a potato masher… so much easier.
